From this mold, he creates a customized pair of clear plastic mouth trays to hold the whitening solution against the teeth. The mouth trays fit snugly and comfortably into a patient's mouth and prevent the whitening solution from contacting the gums. The solution's main ingredient, carbamide peroxide, gently bleaches teeth by releasing hydrogen peroxide when it reacts with saliva in the mouth. For quicker results (about one to two weeks), patients can choose to wear the mouth trays throughout the night. If patients prefer the convenience of more gradual whitening, they can opt to wear the trays for two- to four-hour stretches for about three to five weeks.
